North Vista Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Education Program Merits ADA Recognition
May 22, 2009

North Vista Hospital is proud to announce that the diabetes self-management education program offered through the hospital has been awarded recognition status from the American Diabetes Association. Currently, there are only 2,055 hospital programs throughout the country that have earned this designation.

“We are very excited to receive this designation,” said Sheela Kunishige, diabetes education coordinator. “The ADA process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services they provide. And, of course, it helps consumers to identify these quality programs.”

Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the Education Recognition Program. Through the support of the health care team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his/her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

The Diabetes Care Center of Nevada at North Vista Hospital addresses the educational aspects of treating diabetes. The staff utilizes medical, dietary and educational approaches to help patients effectively manage the disease. The ADA Education Recognition Program effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the national standard for diabetes self-management education programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide the latest information about diabetes management for participants. Patients at the Diabetes Care Center of Nevada at North Vista Hospital are taught self-care skills to provide better management of their diabetes treatment regimen.
