Patient Safety Technology

About Us > Quality & Service Introduction > Patient Safety Technology

North Vista Hospital is a local leader in developing and refining information technology for patient records, research, education and clinical care – from the operating room to patient rooms.

IASIS Healthcare, the parent Corporation for North Vista Hospital, regularly invests resources in a variety of equipment and technologies to ensure patient safety and prevent errors. As an early champion of the Health Information Technology movement, IASIS has long been operating its hospitals from a sophisticated, single-platform, fully integrated clinical information system.  Designed with the electronic health record (EHR) as its foundation, the IASIS system also currently relies upon McKesson solutions for computerized charting for nurses, bar-code scanning for dispensing medication, a Web-based portal for physicians, picture archiving communication systems for radiologists and cardiologists, as well as other clinical and financial processes that are utilized by numerous departments across the Company’s entire network of hospitals, including North Vista Hospital.

One patient safety driven initiative is a hospitalwide electronic medication administration recording (MAR) system. This MAR is intended to enhance patient medication safety and prevent medication-related adverse events by electronically linking the systems that the healthcare team use to order, dispense, and record medication administration. The system incorporates bar code scanning technology by requiring the medication and patient's identification wristband to match when scanned prior to medication administration.

The latest expansion of IASIS’ healthcare information system, part of the hospital company’s continued efforts to deliver high quality patient care, includes physician documentation as well as computerized provider order entry (CPOE), which will be deployed across all of the IASIS hospitals, including North Vista Hospital, beginning in the Summer of 2010, with completion by 2011.

While most U.S. hospitals still rely on handwritten physician instructions for their patients’ care, CPOE will enable the physicians at North Vista Hospital to enter patient orders electronically.  With orders for nursing, pharmacy, laboratory and radiology departments submitted electronically and updated in a single, secure electronic health record, the system’s various care teams will be able to improve information-sharing and access the latest patient information when and where it is needed.  Additionally, computerized provider order entry technology is designed to help reduce the possibility of medication errors due to adverse drug interactions. North Vista Hospital is proud to be the first in Southern Nevada to implement this cutting edge patient safety technology.
