James D. Atkinson, M.D., FACS
As the Medical Director of the Nevada Surgical Weight Loss Center, Dr. James D. Atkinson has had visits by more than 100 surgeons from across the nation seeking to learn his techniques and procedures. Under his leadership, the Nevada Surgical Weight Loss Center has earned a top 5% ranking in the nation by the Health Grades Report.

“It is important for the community to know that our entire practice is dedicated 100% to bariatrics,” says Dr. Atkinson. “This is our fulltime commitment and we do not perform other types of surgeries.”

A native of Las Vegas, Dr. Atkinson earned his bachelor’s degree from Portland State University, and his M.D. from the University of Nevada. In 1995, he went on to perform his residency training at the University Medical Center of Las Vegas where he trained in bariatric surgery, trauma surgery, and served as chief resident in surgery in 2000.

After his surgical residency, Dr. Atkinson specialized in advanced laparoscopy. He then became a consultant for Ethicon Endo-surgery and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Atkinson’s achievements include induction into the distinguished medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, earning a spot as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” in 2002, and being featured in MD News. Dr. Atkinson is married to Dr. Celeste Atkinson and has a son, Derek.

Darren W. Soong M.D., FACS

The recognitions are tributes and affirmations to the professionalism and work ethic with which Dr. Darren W. Soong, M.D. operates.

Dr. Soong, a certified Lap-Band system surgeon, is a partner and surgeon with the Nevada Surgical Weight Loss Center. Prior to working at the Nevada Surgical Weight Loss Center, Dr. Soong was one of the senior partners in the largest and busiest general surgery practices in Las Vegas from 1995–2006. There he specialized in multiple types of surgeries including general, advanced laparoscopic, burn, advanced wound care, trauma, and peripheral nerve surgery. Well versed in the medical industry, Dr. Soong is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is also an assistant clinical professor at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine, Department of Surgery and a member of the American Medical Association, Clark County Medical Society, Nevada State Medical Association, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. A native of Hawai’i, Dr. Soong graduated from UCLA in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, and from the University of Hawai’i in 1990 with his M.D.
Dr. Soong completed his residency at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine in 1995 where he was promoted to Chief Resident. Dr. Soong has since remained a resident of Las Vegas where he lives with his wife and twin daughters.
